What is a woman?
Why are we so confused? Both Christian women and non-Christian women are confused about what it means to be a woman.“…. the Bible describes all kinds of women: prostitutes, virgins, liars, warriors, lovers, mothers, nags, deceivers, gossips, prophetesses, business women, widows and martyrs. To our twenty-first century minds the Bible can seem anti-woman, yet it maintains that a woman is an equal shareholder in the kingdom of God and “the glory of the man.” It paints vivid pictures of seductive sexuality and stunning portraits of womanly strength, wisdom and ingenuity. Can we see in the Bible an overarching definition of womanhood that brings together women from the Old and New Testaments and women of today?” from the preface of Does Christianity Squash Women by Rebecca Jones, the daughter of Edmund P. Clowney.
Does the phrase “women of today” mean women of America or does it include countries where women have to hide their face or where the education of women is restricted? In our society women expect equal work for equal pay, to be heard and respected. They want to participate in academics, sports, politics, the work world, the armed services and the church. They want to make their own decisions about their bodies and their health. If they have children they expect men to share in rearing them. They want to run their own lives without barriers caused by gender. Which of this is correct and is any of it incorrect? What do you think?
a woman,
Cheryl
